| BACKGROUND |
|
Development and relief agencies have long recognized the important role played by data and information in mitigating the impacts of disasters on vulnerable populations. Accurate, comparable and appropriately scaled information on disaster losses, hazards, vulnerabilities and risks is fundamental for designing and implementing effective policies and programmes that reduce disaster risks.
Decision-makers need to be more informed on where to invest in and how to design sustainable projects that will withstand the impacts of potential disaster events. However, the lack of clear and accessible information remains a major obstacle to further improve the implementation of effective policies.
Even if numerous disaster data compilation initiatives have been instigated over the years, their visibility and access is presently limited.
This portal aims at facilitating the access to this valuable information by providing the international community with a centralised access to various disaster data compilation initiatives.
DisDAT is the result of a close collaboration between the Centre for research in Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) and the Global Risk Identification Program (GRIP). |
